Good-bye September and Hello October.  It is hard to believe that we have been in school for 4 weeks.  Congratulations to all students in grades K-2 for your wonderful work with Three Left Feet and the performance on Thursday.   In literacy this week, we learned two new letters: /p/ and /f/. After practicing the sounds for these letters, we learned how to print both upper and lowercase letters /Pp/ and /Ff/. This week, we learned how to draw a parrot and a fox to go along with our new letter sounds. We have also started building words with all of the letters we have learned (p,f,s,m,a,t). We learned that we can change the beginning or ending sound and make a whole new word! (mat - sat - sap).  We were very excited to bring home our UFLI folder this week! In it you will find some activities that you can practice over the weekend and during the week. As we go we will add more decodable passages and games to play. Please return these folders every Thursday s...

Looking Back: On Monday we celebrated international dot day by reading a story called The Dot. We then brainstormed some things that we could make out of a dot and drew our creations in our visual journals. In literacy this week, we learned the letter /t/. After practicing the sound for this letter, we learned how to print both upper and lowercase letter /t/ and learned how to draw a toucan to go along with our new letter sound. As we go we will add more decodable passages and games to play. Please return these every Thursday so we can add the new materials on Friday! On Monday we had a special visitor for day 10!   Looking back In literacy this week, we learned two new letters: /M/ and /S/. After practicing the sounds for these letters, we learned how to print both upper and lowercase letters /Mm/ and /Ss/. This week, we learned how to draw a mouse and a seahorse/snake to go along with our new letter sounds. We have now learned 3 letters together: A, M and S. Our two heart words are “the” and “I”.  See if your child can tell you something that begins with each letter sound!  In math, we continued to talk about numbers to 10 and did some activities to reinforce printing and recognizing numbers. We have been practicing counting and representing numbers daily through our calendar routine. We are very close to reaching 10 days of school! Ask me about it on Monday. We read the story “Chrysanthemum”.  Students completed a directed drawing of the main character.   Looking Ahead Dot Day - we are celebrating International Dot Day on Monday, September 15th. Students are in...

Welcome to Grade One!  Hello families! It has been a wonderful start to the school year. The first few days of school have been filled with excitement and new learning as teachers and students get to know everyone in their class.  This week at school students have been busy practicing new routines. Students are now familiar with their daily classroom routine, and have enjoyed getting to go outside for recess and lunch!  Looking Back:  During literacy this week, students began reviewing letters through the UFLI program (University of Florida Literacy Institute). This program follows a specific scope and sequence to teach students skills necessary for proficient reading.  This week, students focused on letter /Aa/. They practiced printing upper and lowercase letter A on whiteboards and in their printing books. Students followed a directed drawing to complete a picture of an apple. Our classes learned about “heart words” this week - these are irregularly spelled hi...
