Jan.26th -29th

  Looking Back: This week we learned the last 4 letters in the alphabet: /Xx/, /Qu/, /Vv/ and /Zz/. We practiced reading and writing many words that begin with these letter sounds, such as fox, six, quit, van,  vest, , zip, quiz, and zap . We drew pictures in our books and practiced printing each letter. We also learned the heart words “what”, “you” and “have” this week. Please check your child's UFLI folder for the new decodable passages, as well as a Roll & Read game for letters. You can empty student folders out and keep the pages at home.  Thanks! In Science  this week we talked about the concept of area (the space inside a 2D object). We learned how to compare the area of different objects and completed a measuring task comparing the area of objects around the classroom using our hand as a unit of measure.  In Social Studies we continued to talk about landmarks. We practiced reading and writing many words that begin with these letter sounds, such as win, wet, s w im, t w in,  jet, jog, yes, yam, and yak . We drew pictures in our books and practiced printing each letter. We also learned the heart word “was” this week. Please check your child's UFLI folder for the new decodable passages, as well as a Roll & Read game for letter Yy.  In Science  this week we talked about the concept of length.   Jan. 12th-16th Looking Back: This week in literacy we introduced the letter “Ll” and practiced some blends with the letter ‘l’. We practiced the heart word ‘are’. We played some games to reinforce the tricky concept of blends. In Math we focused on 2D shapes this week. We practiced identifying various 2D shapes and created “My 2D Shape Picture” by tracing shapes into our books. We also learned a fun new game with 2D shapes and talked about how we can sort shapes into groups based on different attributes.  In science this week we completed a fun task which incorporated using our new vocabulary to describe properties of objects. We had to write sentences to describe the different properties of our toy or stuffy. Ex.) My toy is soft. My toy is blue. It was lots of fun!  In social studies we introduced the topic of landmarks. We learned that a landmark is something you can see that helps you know where you are. It can be part of nature or something that people built.  ...

Welcome Back!

  Jan. 5th - 9th Looking Back: Happy New Year!! We hope everyone enjoyed a restful and enjoyable winter break with their families! It was great to be back in the classroom with all of our friends.  In literacy this week we began to talk about the /r/ sound.  We practiced this sound at the beginning of words and also incorporated this sound into longer words containing /r/ blends. Students have brought home a new Roll & Read to practice.   In writing we wrote about what we did over our winter break. We also read a story called “Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution”.  We talked about making a goal to get better at something or help someone. We each thought about what our goal will be and wrote it in a sentence and then did a detailed picture to go with our sentence.  We also had a visit from Zero the Hero this week for our 60th day of school…can you believe it?
