Welcome Back!

 Jan. 5th - 9th

Looking Back:

Happy New Year!! We hope everyone enjoyed a restful and enjoyable winter break with their families! It was great to be back in the classroom with all of our friends.

In literacy this week we began to talk about the /r/ sound.  We practiced this sound at the beginning of words and also incorporated this sound into longer words containing /r/ blends. Students have brought home a new Roll & Read to practice.

In writing we wrote about what we did over our winter break. We also read a story called “Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution”.  We talked about making a goal to get better at something or help someone. We each thought about what our goal will be and wrote it in a sentence and then did a detailed picture to go with our sentence.

We also had a visit from Zero the Hero this week for our 60th day of school…can you believe it? He brought us a fun measuring activity using marshmallows!

In science we started a new unit focusing on the properties of matter. We learned what the word “property” means and did a classroom hunt to find things with the property word we told them. Ask your child if they can tell you some words to describe objects! (i.e. shiny, smooth, bumpy, etc..).

We will be doing a fun activity next week and will be allowed to bring in a favourite toy or stuffy from home to write about. See the message below to see when your child will be bringing their toy.

We have been following a live camera on two bald eagles from California. There are named Jackie and Shadow. Here is the link if you want to check it out for yourselves: https://friendsofbigbearvalley.org/livestream/

Looking Ahead:

Science:  Next week as part of a science lesson on Properties of Matter, students have been asked to bring

a small toy of their choosing to describe.  Please ensure students bring only one toy and it must be able to fit

in their backpack and remain quiet during teaching times.  As well, please do not send in electronic devices.

Mrs. Fell’s class will be describing their toys on Monday and Mrs. Watson’s class will be describing their toys on Wednesday.
