June 26, 2026 Dear Families, As we wrap up the school year, we want to sincerely thank you for the opportunity to teach your wonderful children. It has been such a joy to watch them grow, learn, and shine each day. We are also so grateful for your support throughout the year— from attending conferences, volunteering your time, and supporting your child in their learning journey —your involvement and encouragement truly made a difference. Wishing you all a relaxing and fun-filled summer! Love Mrs. Watson & Mrs. Fell

June. 15th-19th

June 15-19 We had a busy and engaging week of learning! Looking Back: Literacy In UFLI, we continued building our phonics skills by learning about vowel teams that make long vowel sounds. Students practiced reading and spelling words with the long /a/ , /e/ , /i/ , and /u/ sounds. Through games, word building activities, and reading practice, students learned how vowel teams work together to create different long vowel sounds in words. Math Our mathematicians explored 3D shapes this week. We identified common 3D shapes and investigated their attributes. Students tested each shape to determine whether it could roll, stack, or slide , helping them understand how the properties of shapes affect the way they move. We enjoyed making predictions and testing our ideas using a variety of hands-on materials. Social Studies In Social Studies, we explored the concept of change over time . Students participated in a fun baby picture guessing game , where they examined photos of their clas...

Looking Back: This week in UFLI we continued to learn about r controlled vowels. We focussed on /er/ as well as /ir/ and /ur/. We learned that this sound can be found at the beginning, middle and end of a word and sometimes it can be tricky to tell which spelling to use. We practiced spelling many words containing this new sound, such as “purse, surf, firm, girl, nerve, & fern.” Our new heart words this week were other, another, mother, & brother.  In math this week we started talking about 3D shapes. We learned that these shapes are made up of different 2D shapes and are NOT flat! We looked at examples of some of the following 3D shapes: sphere, cylinder, cube, cone, and a pyramid. We learned that the face of a 3D shape means the flat part. We started a 3D shape booklet and focussed on a sphere.  In Science this week we completed our learning about movement and finished our animal movement books.  We were also very excited about our animal research projec...

Looking Back: Literacy: Learning the Sounds "ar" and "or" In our UFLI phonics lessons, we focused on the vowel teams "ar" and "or." Students practiced reading, spelling, and identifying words such as car, star, park, corn, fork, and storm . We worked on listening for these sounds in words and applying this knowledge during reading and writing activities. Continued practice noticing these patterns in books and everyday words helps build strong decoding and spelling skills. Writing: Picture Prompt Stories Students used a picture prompt to inspire their writing. We carefully observed details in the picture, discussed what might be happening, and used our ideas to create sentences and stories. We focused on including descriptive details, using sounds we know to spell words, and organizing our ideas so that others can understand our writing. Math: Standard and Non-Standard Measurement In math, we explored different ways to measure objects. We learn...

We went to the zoo!

May. 25-29 Looking Back: We had a great time at the Calgary Zoo on Thursday! We had so much fun observing the different animals and learning all about penguins!   This week in UFLI we learned about something called a final stable syllable. This is a syllable that comes at the end of a word and always makes the same sound. This week we focussed on the final stable syllable -le. We practiced reading and writing words like “apple, puzzle, jungle, uncle” etc.) We also reviewed different ending patterns of words. These are the ending patterns we have learned so far: -ILD, -IND, -OLD, -OST, -OLT, y spells /i/, y spells /e/ and -LE at the end of a word. Our new heart word this week was people.  Our bean plants have been growing a lot and are very tall! This week we observed our plants and learned about the different parts of a plant. We sketched our bean plants and labelled the seed, roots, stem, leaves and buds. We noticed lots of cool things like veins on the leaves and...

May. 19-22 Looking Back: This week in UFLI we learned about the different sounds that letter Y can make at the end of a word. We learned that when letter Y comes at the end of a one syllable word, it makes the long /i/ sound, like at the end of the words “my” and “fly”. We learned that Y can also make the long /e/ sound at the end of long words with two or more syllables, like “baby” and “puppy”. Our new heart words this week were four and fourth.  In science we started a new unit about energy and movement. We learned about direction, speed and pathway. We used our knowledge of different pathways (straight, curvy, zig zag, spiral) to describe how animals move.  In Social Studies we learned about the difference between sharing and trading. We also discussed different ways people trade, such as buying and bartering. We learned that buying and selling uses money and bartering is the exchange of goods and services.  Our plants have been growing! Take a look at how tal...

Looking Back: Happy May Long Weekend!  See everyone on Tuesday! In this UFLI lesson, students learned about the spelling patterns -tch and -dge at the end of words. These patterns are used after a short vowel sound . For example, students explored words such as catch, patch, and bridge . They practiced listening for sounds, reading words, spelling words, and using sentence patterns. Students learned that: -tch is often used after a short vowel to spell the /ch/ sound (e.g., match, itch ). -dge is often used after a short vowel to spell the /j/ sound (e.g., badge, edge ). Through games, word building, reading practice, and writing activities, students strengthened their phonics and decoding skills while building confidence in reading and spelling unfamiliar words.  Take some time this week to practice reading the Decodables and Roll and Read in your UFLi folder.  We learned 3 new sight words this week: woman, women and move.  In Math, we finished up our ad...
