 Looking Back:

Literacy: Learning the Sounds "ar" and "or"

In our UFLI phonics lessons, we focused on the vowel teams "ar" and "or." Students practiced reading, spelling, and identifying words such as car, star, park, corn, fork, and storm. We worked on listening for these sounds in words and applying this knowledge during reading and writing activities. Continued practice noticing these patterns in books and everyday words helps build strong decoding and spelling skills.

Writing: Picture Prompt Stories

Students used a picture prompt to inspire their writing. We carefully observed details in the picture, discussed what might be happening, and used our ideas to create sentences and stories. We focused on including descriptive details, using sounds we know to spell words, and organizing our ideas so that others can understand our writing.

Math: Standard and Non-Standard Measurement

In math, we explored different ways to measure objects. We learned about non-standard measurement, using items such as cubes, blocks, or hand spans to compare lengths. We also began discussing standard measurement tools and why they help us measure more accurately. Students practiced estimating, measuring, and comparing the lengths of various classroom objects.






Science: How Animals Move

Our science learning focused on the many ways animals move. Students explored how animals walk, run, hop, slither, swim, fly, and climb. We discussed how different body parts help animals move and survive in their environments. Students enjoyed sharing examples of animals and describing their unique movements.

Looking Ahead:

We have an upcoming project that we will need a shoebox for (preferable with a lid). Please set one aside and we will ask for them in a couple of weeks.  Please send in a shoebox by Friday, June 12th.


We are asking that every student bring in a baby picture for a fun game we will set up in the next week or so. You can send in a physical copy or email one to your child’s teacher. Thanks for your help!  We require all pictures by Friday, June 12th.



The Library is now closed for the year.  Please begin returning all books as soon as possible.

  Looking Back: On Monday we celebrated international dot day by reading a story called The Dot. We then brainstormed some things that we could make out of a dot and drew our creations in our visual journals. In literacy this week, we learned the letter /t/. After practicing the sound for this letter, we learned how to print both upper and lowercase letter /t/ and learned how to draw a toucan to go along with our new letter sound. We have also started building words with all of the letters we have learned (s,m,a,t). We learned that we can change the beginning or ending sound and make a whole new word! (mat - sat -at).  We were very excited to bring home our UFLI folder this week! In it you will find some activities that you can practice over the weekend and during the week. Happy February

  February. 2nd - 6th  Looking Back: Happy February  Our first day back this week was Groundhog Day! We made some predictions about the groundhog and wrote a sentence to guess if he would see his shadow! Turns out Balzac Billy calls for 6 more weeks of winter!  This week in our UFLI lessons we did a short vowel review. We practiced reading longer words with blends at the beginning and at the end!  We also learned about the FLSZ spelling rule, which we also call the “floss rule”. This is a rule that applies to one syllable words, where if the last sound is a F, L, S, or Z, and the vowel that comes before it has a short vowel sound, then the last letter is doubled. (ie. Je ff wi ll pa ss Bu zz .) First Week of School: Sept.2-5

Welcome to Grade One!  Hello families! It has been a wonderful start to the school year. The first few days of school have been filled with excitement and new learning as teachers and students get to know everyone in their class.  This week at school students have been busy practicing new routines. Students are now familiar with their daily classroom routine, and have enjoyed getting to go outside for recess and lunch!  Looking Back:  During literacy this week, students began reviewing letters through the UFLI program (University of Florida Literacy Institute). This program follows a specific scope and sequence to teach students skills necessary for proficient reading.  This week, students focused on letter /Aa/. They practiced printing upper and lowercase letter A on whiteboards and in their printing books. Students followed a directed drawing to complete a picture of an apple.
