April. 20th - 24th Looking Back: In UFLI  we learned a new rule with the letter G. We learned that the letter G can spell /j/ when it is followed by a silent E, such as the word cage. We also reviewed words with the silent E pattern and talked about words that are exceptions to this rule. The first exception to the silent E pattern is words that end with VE, where the vowel makes the short sound. We practiced the words give, live & have. The second exception to the silent E pattern is when there is an O that sounds like a short U. We practiced words like some, come, love, done, & none. There is one new decodable passage and a Roll & Read game for you to practice at home!  On Tuesday we celebrated Earth Day! We read stories, watched videos, and discussed some different ways that we can help take care of the Earth. Some of our ideas included using both sides of the paper, turning off the tap, recycling, planting a garden, and picking up garbage. We did a guid...

Way to go Grade 1!  We are so proud of all the work you put into the assembly this week.  Your efforts paid off and it was a huge success!  Thank you to all the families for coming out to support the students and for your support at home with learning lines (and everything else you do!) In UFLI this week, we practiced the concept of “magic e” with the long/u/sound. We learned that /u/ has two long vowel sounds: /u/ as in spoon and /yu/ as in unicorn. We also learned a new rule this week with the letter c. We learned that when c is followed by an e at the end of a word, it will make the /s/ sound, such as “rice, face & price”. There are some new “Roll & Read” pages for students to practice at home! Our heart words this week were “one” and “once”. In Math this week, we continued to focus on subtraction. We reviewed the concept through reading and solving word problems together, playing games, and reviewing different strategies.  Looking Ahead: Field Trip...

We also practiced the concept of “magic e” with the long vowel sounds for /e/.  In math this week, we focused on subtraction. We talked about different strategies to use when solving subtraction problems, such as using a number line, counting on fingers, and using blocks.. We practiced solving some subtraction problems by using a number line and writing the corresponding number sentence.  In preparation for our Assembly and Earth Day, students have been learning about the planet Earth.  We have been focusing on how we can protect our planet by doing small things to conserve water and energy, care for our planet and recycle. Looking Ahead: Field Tri...

Looking Back: It was great to see everyone after the spring break! Here are some of our learning highlights from the week:  On Monday, we were so excited to take part in McKenzie Towne School’s pancake breakfast! What a great way to celebrate our first day back at school. The pancakes were delicious and there were various pancake learning activities and stories sprinkled throughout our day.  In UFLI this week we were introduced to ‘silent e’ and learned how it makes the vowel in the word say its own name. We practiced this concept with the letter ‘a’ and the letter ‘i’. Our heart words this week were: who, by & my. There are two new decodable passages and a Roll & Read games for you to practice at home!  In math this week, we reviewed strategies for adding / subtracting numbers. We reviewed strategies such as number lines, counting-on, drawing pictures and doubles facts. Mrs. Watson’s class practiced using cuisenaire rods to make 10 in many different ways. ...
