 April. 20th - 24th

Looking Back:

In UFLI  we learned a new rule with the letter G. We learned that the letter G can spell /j/ when it is followed by a silent E, such as the word cage. We also reviewed words with the silent E pattern and talked about words that are exceptions to this rule. The first exception to the silent E pattern is words that end with VE, where the vowel makes the short sound. We practiced the words give, live & have. The second exception to the silent E pattern is when there is an O that sounds like a short U. We practiced words like some, come, love, done, & none. There is one new decodable passage and a Roll & Read game for you to practice at home!

On Tuesday we celebrated Earth Day! We read stories, watched videos, and discussed some different ways that we can help take care of the Earth. Some of our ideas included using both sides of the paper, turning off the tap, recycling, planting a garden, and picking up garbage. We did a guided drawing together and then wrote a sentence about something we could do to help the Earth.

This week, we went on our field trip to The Confluence Historic Site, where students engaged in a variety of interactive, hands-on activities exploring community, the past, and how life has changed over time. They worked collaboratively to build a map of Calgary and the surrounding area, comparing what the land looked like before European settlers arrived to how it appears today. This helped students understand how land use and communities have evolved over time.

Students also worked together to construct a child-sized log cabin using cooperation, communication, and teamwork to explore how people in the past met their needs. They also examined artifacts from the North West Mounted Police, the Settlers, the Indigenous, and the Metis.

Finally, despite the windy weather, we made it outside for a walk. We got to see the point of confluence - where the Bow and Elbow rivers meet!

Thank-you to all the parent volunteers who spent the day with us. Your support was greatly appreciated!

Looking Ahead:

School Information

Muddy Conditions

With the muddy conditions, please send your students with an extra pair of clothes in case they need them (ie socks and pants especially!).  Rubber boots are a great help for keeping us dry as we enjoy the outdoors.

Field Trip to the Calgary Zoo - We are currently planning for our final field trip of the year to the Calgary Zoo on May 28th. We require 5 parent volunteers to accompany the class on this trip. Please reach out ASAP if you are interested in volunteering!

Toys at School- NO! This is a reminder that students are to leave their toys at home, including Pokeman cards and stuffies. Toys are a distraction in the classroom where the focus is on learning. As well, toys can get lost , misplaced, or fall into someone else’s hands. The school is not responsible for dealing with such issues or replacement of articles gone missing.
