First Week of School: Sept.2-5

Welcome to Grade One!

Hello families! It has been a wonderful start to the school year. The first few days of school have been filled with excitement and new learning as teachers and students get to know everyone in their class.

This week at school students have been busy practicing new routines. Students are now familiar with their daily classroom routine, and have enjoyed getting to go outside for recess and lunch!

Looking Back:

During literacy this week, students began reviewing letters through the UFLI program (University of Florida Literacy Institute). This program follows a specific scope and sequence to teach students skills necessary for proficient reading.

This week, students focused on letter /Aa/. They practiced printing upper and lowercase letter A on whiteboards and in their printing books. Students followed a directed drawing to complete a picture of an apple.
Our classes learned about “heart words” this week - these are irregularly spelled high frequency words where some part of the word has to be learned by heart. Our heart word this week was “the”. Students practiced printing this word and were able to search for this word around the classroom and in their books.

In Math, students have been representing the number for each day of school. During our calendar routine, we are talking daily about how many days of school we have had and the different ways we could represent or show that number (e.g. tally marks, 10 frame, etc.).  Ask your child to tell you one or two ways they can show a number.

New playdoh!

Looking Ahead:

Birthday Celebrations:
We enjoy recognizing your child’s birthday as close to the date as we can.  Please do not send in treats to share with others on your child’s birthday.  Instead, we would love to celebrate by reading a book of your child’s choice on or close to their birthday.  If your child’s birthday falls in July or August, we will decide on a date in June to celebrate their birthday.

Library: Our library day is Tuesday. We will visit the library next week and will bring home our first book on Tuesday. Please return library books by Monday or Tuesday in order for your child to be able to sign out a book the following week.

If you need to contact us for any reason, the best way is through email.

MTS Open House

On Thursday September 11 from 4:30pm-6:30pm, McKenzie Towne School will be hosting an Open House for students and their families.

If you are interested in attending this informal event, please feel free to pop into the school with your student to meet their teacher and tour the school.

Terry Fox Run

The school Terry Fox Run will take place on Friday, September 12th at 9:00 am. Students are encouraged to bring in Toonies for Terry to support cancer research. If we reach our fundraising goal of $1150, we’ll celebrate the following week with a special “Wear Your Favourite Sports Swag” day!
