May11-15

Looking Back:

Happy May Long Weekend!  See everyone on Tuesday!

In this UFLI lesson, students learned about the spelling patterns -tch and -dge at the end of words. These patterns are used after a short vowel sound. For example, students explored words such as catch, patch, and bridge. They practiced listening for sounds, reading words, spelling words, and using sentence patterns.

Students learned that:

  • -tch is often used after a short vowel to spell the /ch/ sound (e.g., match, itch).

  • -dge is often used after a short vowel to spell the /j/ sound (e.g., badge, edge).

Through games, word building, reading practice, and writing activities, students strengthened their phonics and decoding skills while building confidence in reading and spelling unfamiliar words.  Take some time this week to practice reading the Decodables and Roll and Read in your UFLi folder.

We learned 3 new sight words this week: woman, women and move.

In Math, we finished up our addition and subtraction units.  Students played games and practiced making number bonds and finding missing addends this week.  We will continue to practice addition and subtraction fluency and problem-solving periodically for the remainder of the year.

Students have been excited to watch our vegetable gardens grow.  Students planted bean seeds, and some of them have begun to sprout.  We have been examining the needs of plants and the plant life cycle over the past two weeks.  Students have been making connections with the spring growth they see in the community.

Looking Ahead:

Community Walks Notice (ongoing till the end of the year)

We hope to get out for a few community walks over the next few weeks and enjoy learning outside. Depending on the weather, we will try to head out for a community walk one day this week.

School Information

Muddy Conditions

Given the muddy conditions, please send your students with an extra pair of clothes in case they need them (especially socks and pants!).  Rubber boots are a great help for keeping us dry as we enjoy the outdoors.

Field Trip to the Calgary Zoo - We are currently planning for our final field trip of the year to the Calgary Zoo on May 28th. We require 5 parent volunteers to accompany EACH class on this trip. Please reach out ASAP if you are interested in volunteering!

Toys at School- NO! This is a reminder that students are to leave their toys at home, including Pokémon cards and stuffies. Toys are a distraction in the classroom where the focus is on learning. As well, toys can get lost, misplaced, or fall into someone else’s hands. The school is not responsible for dealing with such issues or the replacement of articles that are gone missing.
