Jan. 19-23

 Looking Back:

This week we learned three new letters: /Ww/, /Jj/ and /Yy/. We practiced reading and writing many words that begin with these letter sounds, such as win, wet, swim, twin,  jet, jog, yes, yam, and yak. We drew pictures in our books and practiced printing each letter. We also learned the heart word “was” this week. Please check your child's UFLI folder for the new decodable passages, as well as a Roll & Read game for letter Yy.

In Science  this week we talked about the concept of length. We learned how to compare the length of different objects and completed a measuring task comparing the length of objects around the classroom.

In Social Studies we continued to talk about landmarks. We learned about natural and manmade landmarks. See if you can spot some landmarks in your community this weekend!

Math:  This week we continued to learn about 2D shapes.  Students have been focusing on recognizing familiar shapes in the environment and sorting them based on their attributes (4 corners, rounded edges…)  As well, Thursday  was our 70th day and Zero the Hero came to visit us.  We worked with the other class on a game where we practiced adding to 10.

Looking Ahead:

Valentine’s Day is coming soon.  We will be celebrating Valentine’s day on Wednesday, February 11th.  Students are welcome to bring Valentines to distribute to the class on Wednesday, February 11th. If your child chooses to bring Valentines, please send one for every student (Mrs. Watson’s class has 24 students and Mrs. Fell’s class has 22 students). Please only send Valentine's for your child's homeroom - either Mrs. Watson or Mrs. Fell. Please only have your child write their name on the Valentine, rather than putting the names of friends. This makes distribution much easier in the classroom. We ask that you please do not attach candy to the valentines as per CBE policy.

Food Support

Did you know that the Breakfast Club of Canada has shared research demonstrating that 40% of Alberta’s children experience food insecurity?  This means that 4 out of 10 children do not have access to food when they are hungry.

If your family is experiencing challenges with providing food for your children you can find help at Brown Bagging Calgary.

Complete this form for support and they can deliver lunches to McKenzie Towne School for your children. https://go.bb4ck.org/l/858913/2024-01-15/38fdbw You can also find out more information on their website https://bb4ck.org/
