Jan. 5th - 9th Looking Back: Happy New Year!! We hope everyone enjoyed a restful and enjoyable winter break with their families! It was great to be back in the classroom with all of our friends.  In literacy this week we began to talk about the /r/ sound.  We practiced this sound at the beginning of words and also incorporated this sound into longer words containing /r/ blends. Students have brought home a new Roll & Read to practice.   In writing we wrote about what we did over our winter break. We also read a story called “Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution”.  We talked about making a goal to get better at something or help someone. We each thought about what our goal will be and wrote it in a sentence and then did a detailed picture to go with our sentence.  We also had a visit from Zero the Hero this week for our 60th day of school…can you believe it? He brought us a fun measuring activity using marshmallows!  In science we started a new u...

It has been a fun-filled, busy week - packed full of learning and lots of holiday joy! This week students enjoyed gathering together in the gym to sing Christmas carols and listened to a read-aloud from Dr. Slater. Thank-you to parent council for providing us with yummy oranges and candy canes while we listened to our story.  We also loved learning about the winter solstice and had lots of fun working together to make our stone soup. We even made bannock and our own butter!  Here is the recipe for bannock that we followed (in case you would like to try it at home)!  Bannock Ingredients · 3 cups all-purpose flour (+ more for kneading) · 2 tablespoons baking powder · ¼ cup vegetable oil · 1 ½ cups water · 1 pinch salt · 2 Tbsp sugar 1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F 2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, salt, water, sugar and oil. Knead on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes. Spread out onto a cookie sheet to 1 inch thickness. Poke holes i...
Looking Back: Thank you so much for attending our winter concert on Thursday. The kids had a wonderful time and really sang their hearts out. Such a special celebration for everyone. In literacy this week, we went back to the letter ‘s’ and learned about how to add it to the end of a word. We discovered that if a word ends with a voiced sound, the ‘s’ makes a /z/ sound (like in the word dogs). See if your child can play the new Roll & Read game at home to practice our new rules!  In writing this week, we practiced some “free writing” where we got to choose what we wrote about. Many of us chose to write sentences all about ourselves or our weekend. Another task this week also involved using a picture prompt with labels. We used words like “cookies” “milk” “oven” “baking” and “tree” to practice writing sentences about a picture. Some of us even tried to come up with a story!  In math this week we continued our learning around patterns. We learned how to label a patter...

Looking Back: H a p p y D e c e m b e r On Monday, we discovered a special visitor in our classroom…an elf! We decided to name our class elf Candy Cane. This week, Candy Cane left us some notes about different things we could do to be kind to one another. In literacy this week, we learned about the letter /e/. We learned the sounds for this letter and practiced printing the uppercase and lowercase letter Ee. We have now learned all 5 vowel sounds and have been able to apply our knowledge to read and write lots of new words! There are two new decodable passages, as well as a “Roll & Read” game that have been added to our UFLI folders this week.  In math this week, we continued to review and practice representing numbers in a variety of ways and by using different materials.  We also started learning about patterns. We learned that a pattern can be anything that repeats over and over again. We talked about how a pattern can even be in the days of the week or months of...

It was great to connect at conferences over the last two days. We really enjoyed sharing your child’s successes with you!   Looking Back: In literacy this week, we focused on letters /g/ and /b/. We learned the sounds for both letters and practiced printing the uppercase and lowercase letters. We have been able to apply our knowledge of letter sounds to read and write lots of new words! There are two new decodable passages, as well as a “Roll & Read” game that have been added to our UFLI folders this week. We have practiced 2 different ways to play the “Roll & Read” game in class. See if your child can show you how to play at home!  In math this week, we reviewed and practiced representing numbers in a variety of ways and by using different materials. We completed a fun challenge to represent a given number using things such as popsicle sticks, cards, dominoes, dice, rulers, counters etc. We will continue to practice representing numbers next week as well.  We als...

Looking Back: In UFLI this week, we learned all about letters /C/ and /U/. We practiced printing both uppercase and lowercase letters. We are getting really good at using the lines on our page! We learned the sound for letter Cc/Uu and drew pictures in our journals of things that start with this letter sound. See if your child can tell you what they drew! Our new heart words this week were “to” and “do”. This week, we also learned a new way to play our “Roll and Read” game, which has been added to our UFLI folders. This game can be played at home to help practice decoding skills and reading words.  Wondering how you can support reading at home?  Every week, we put 3 new tasks into students' blue duotangs.  Decodable Passages - These passages use skills taught during the week and previously covered concepts.  Practice reading these at home, independently or with support is a great way to review and practice our reading skills.  Think of this as our home reading ...
