 Looking Back:


Thank you so much for attending our winter concert on Thursday. The kids had a wonderful time and really sang their hearts out. Such a special celebration for everyone.


In literacy this week, we went back to the letter ‘s’ and learned about how to add it to the end of a word. We discovered that if a word ends with a voiced sound, the ‘s’ makes a /z/ sound (like in the word dogs). See if your child can play the new Roll & Read game at home to practice our new rules! 


In writing this week, we practiced some “free writing” where we got to choose what we wrote about. Many of us chose to write sentences all about ourselves or our weekend. Another task this week also involved using a picture prompt with labels. We used words like “cookies” “milk” “oven” “baking” and “tree” to practice writing sentences about a picture. Some of us even tried to come up with a story! 


In math this week we continued our learning around patterns. We learned how to label a pattern and how to identify the core of a pattern. On Day 50, we had a special visit from Zero the Hero! He brought us 50 jingle bells (one for every student) which we had to search for in the library. We even got to bring our bell home! 


Looking Ahead:

Stone Soup

Your child should have brought a letter home talking about “Stone Soup”. We will be making soup together as a classroom community to celebrate the winter solstice next Thursday, Dec.18th. Please send in a small amount of vegetables cut up and in a container or baggie to add to the soup. Please also sign and return the permission slip so that your child can participate in the tasting portion of the day. It should be a lot of fun!


Library

Students will not be signing out any new library books before the winter break. If you have any library books at home, please return them to school next week. Thank-you!

  Looking Back: On Monday we celebrated international dot day by reading a story called The Dot. We then brainstormed some things that we could make out of a dot and drew our creations in our visual journals. In literacy this week, we learned the letter /t/. After practicing the sound for this letter, we learned how to print both upper and lowercase letter /t/ and learned how to draw a toucan to go along with our new letter sound. We have also started building words with all of the letters we have learned (s,m,a,t). We learned that we can change the beginning or ending sound and make a whole new word! (mat - sat -at).  We were very excited to bring home our UFLI folder this week! In it you will find some activities that you can practice over the weekend and during the week. Happy February

  February. 2nd - 6th  Looking Back: Happy February  Our first day back this week was Groundhog Day! We made some predictions about the groundhog and wrote a sentence to guess if he would see his shadow! Turns out Balzac Billy calls for 6 more weeks of winter!  This week in our UFLI lessons we did a short vowel review. We practiced reading longer words with blends at the beginning and at the end!  We also learned about the FLSZ spelling rule, which we also call the “floss rule”. This is a rule that applies to one syllable words, where if the last sound is a F, L, S, or Z, and the vowel that comes before it has a short vowel sound, then the last letter is doubled. (ie. Je ff wi ll pa ss Bu zz .) First Week of School: Sept.2-5

Welcome to Grade One!  Hello families! It has been a wonderful start to the school year. The first few days of school have been filled with excitement and new learning as teachers and students get to know everyone in their class.  This week at school students have been busy practicing new routines. Students are now familiar with their daily classroom routine, and have enjoyed getting to go outside for recess and lunch!  Looking Back:  During literacy this week, students began reviewing letters through the UFLI program (University of Florida Literacy Institute). This program follows a specific scope and sequence to teach students skills necessary for proficient reading.  This week, students focused on letter /Aa/. They practiced printing upper and lowercase letter A on whiteboards and in their printing books. Students followed a directed drawing to complete a picture of an apple.
