November 17-21

Looking Back:

In UFLI this week, we learned all about letters /C/ and /U/. We practiced printing both uppercase and lowercase letters. We are getting really good at using the lines on our page! We learned the sound for letter Cc/Uu and drew pictures in our journals of things that start with this letter sound. See if your child can tell you what they drew! Our new heart words this week were “to” and “do”. This week, we also learned a new way to play our “Roll and Read” game, which has been added to our UFLI folders. This game can be played at home to help practice decoding skills and reading words.

Wondering how you can support reading at home?  Every week, we put 3 new tasks into students' blue duotangs.

  1.  Decodable Passages - These passages use skills taught during the week and previously covered concepts.  Practice reading these at home, independently or with support is a great way to review and practice our reading skills.  Think of this as our home reading - try to read these passages a couple of times each week.

  1. Home Practice Pages - Here is a great video that breaks down the 4 skills on this page and how to reinforce them at home.

  1. Roll and Read - This is a fun and easy way to practice reading skills.  All you need is a die and something to cover the words (blocks, buttons, or small objects)  We have learned two ways to play.  The first way is to roll the die and pick one of the words under that number.  Player 1 read the word - if they are successful they get to cover the word.   Should they be unsuccessful they do not cover the word and we pass the die to Player 2.  Player 2 rolls the die and then selects a word from the list (if this is an advanced reader, model sounding out each sound and then blending all the sounds together. Again, cover the word if successful.  Continue to play until all the words are covered.  Count up the objects if you wish.  Our second way to play is begin with all the words covered.  Player 1 rolls the die, pick one of the words under the number, uncovers it and tries to read.  If successful they get that token, if not replace and Payer 2 gets a turn.  Continue to roll and read until all the words are uncovered.  Count up the tokens and see who wins.  Families are free to make up new and creative ways to play!

In Social Studies this week, we continued exploring the topic of Identity and Belonging.  Students discussed attributes that make us who we are.  We created a self-portrait using paper. First, we drew our facial features and coloured in the eyes and mouth. Students then created hair and backgrounds. They turned out so cute!  When you come to conferences, please check out our work.

Continued from last week. We have been practicing counting, reading and writing numbers to 20. We have been learning how a number line is a tool for counting.  We practiced counting backwards, by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.  The students completed a show me what you know and wrote numbers to 20 in order.  Keep practicing reading and writing those teen numbers!

Have you checked out Mr. V’s blog?  Students have been learning lacrosse skills during gym.  It has been amazing seeing them learn how to scoop and shoot.  As well they even have been trying a few lacrosse tricks.

Looking Ahead:

Library:  We are hosting a Owl’s Nest book fair this week.  On Monday or Tuesday students will get a chance to see what great books are available from this small business right here in Calgary.  On Wednesday or Thursday, students will have the opportunity to purchase books during class times.  Alternately, the books fair will be open during conferences and parents can visit the book fair during that time.

Cooler Weather is Coming.  Please make sure students have weather-appropriate clothing in their backpacks.  Calgary weather can change fast.  A pair of mitts and a hat are always good to keep in their bags moving forward.  As well, please label their items.

Math Activity: Next Wednesday, we will be doing and counting and graphing activity with Fruit Loops. Please let us know if your child has any dietary concerns with this food item. They will be given a handful of Fruit Loops, and I am sure some of them will end up in their mouth!

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher Conferences will take place in person at the school on Thursday, November 27 , from 3:30pm - 7:30pm and Friday, November 28, from 8:00am to 12:00pm.

Parents will book conference times through their CBE account. Conference bookings will open on Saturday, November 22 at 8:00am and close on Thursday, November 27 , at 2:00pm.

If parents require support with bookings, they can call the office.

These conferences are an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and to provide teachers with information about your child that is important. Teachers will inform you on how your child is adapting to and settling into the new school year, but due to the minimal amount of time spent in school thus far, they will not provide information on student learning or achievement.
