Oct. 1st - 3rd

Hello families! It was a short but busy week in grade one! Here are some of the learning highlights from our week together:

For literacy we were excited to learn a new vowel…. The letter ‘i’! Now we can read and spell even more words! We read our first decodable passages in class this week and they are in our blue folders to practice over the next week. Thank you for your support in this valuable practice time together.

In math we continued our learning with representing numbers to 20 with tally marks. We completed a fun “Write the Room” activity to practice reading tally marks. Zero the Hero also paid us a visit for the 20th day of school! He brought us a new “Robot Race to 20” math game to play. See if your child can tell you how the game is played!

Students in Mrs. Watson’s class were excited to meet their buddies in Mrs. Coleman’s grade three class. See if your child can tell you the name of their buddy!

Students spent some reflective time outside as we learned more about the season of fall. Each student practiced finding a sit spot to quietly observe and draw a fall tree.

Looking Ahead:

The Calgary Board of Education continues to prepare for an Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) strike starting on Monday, Oct. 6.

All classes will be cancelled. Families are being asked not to send their children to school.

Here are some suggestions for activities you may wish to do with your child if you have time:

  • Read every day!

Have your child listen to stories and share a book with an older sibling or parent. This helps them develop a love for reading! Children can look at pictures, ask questions, and maybe even notice some heart words (the, a, I, and).

  • Play games together (board games, card games etc.) to practice number identification, counting skills, and to help develop subitizing skills (quick recognition of a number) such as when rolling dice.

  • Spend time outside and enjoy nature!

We hope to all be back in the classroom soon! Thank you for your continued support.
