Looking Back:

In UFLI this week, we began talking about consonant digraphs. These are when two consonants come together to make one sound. We learned two digraphs this week: /-th/ voiced (as in this) and unvoiced (as in thumb and bath). We practiced reading and writing words containing these new sounds. We also learned 3 new heart words this week: they, their, and were. Check your child’s UFLI folder for the two new decodable passages and some practice sentences with our new sounds! 


On Wednesday this week, it was Pink Shirt Day! We talked about different ways we could be kind to ourselves, to others, and to our land.


In Math, students continued to gain familiarity with adding 2 numbers together through modelled practice, lessons, games, and seatwork.  We also celebrated day 90, and Zero the Hero visited us for a special activity.



Looking Ahead:


100th Day Celebration - Beginning the week of March 9th

In Math, we have been counting down to the 100th day of school!  Can you believe the 100th day is on Thursday, March 12th? We will be making a wall to show what 100 things look like. Please look around your house and find something small you could send to school in a ziplock bag that represents 100 things. For example, you could send in 100 Cheerios, 100 chocolate chips, 100 LEGO pieces, 100 paper clips, etc.  Work together with your child to count out 100 of their chosen item and send them in a bag labelled with their name. The items will be returned to you in a couple of weeks. Thank you for your help!


Boxes needed!

Please save a small box (shoe box or cereal box-sized) for your child to bring to school starting next week. Students will need their box to start building their special project on March.13th


Reminder

*****Just a reminder that toys, trinkets and distracting jewelry need to remain at home. We have had an escalation of these items being brought to school and they are becoming a distraction from learning. Thank you so much for your cooperation!

  Looking Back: On Monday we celebrated international dot day by reading a story called The Dot. We then brainstormed some things that we could make out of a dot and drew our creations in our visual journals. In literacy this week, we learned the letter /t/. After practicing the sound for this letter, we learned how to print both upper and lowercase letter /t/ and learned how to draw a toucan to go along with our new letter sound. We have also started building words with all of the letters we have learned (s,m,a,t). We learned that we can change the beginning or ending sound and make a whole new word! (mat - sat -at).  We were very excited to bring home our UFLI folder this week! In it you will find some activities that you can practice over the weekend and during the week.   February. 2nd - 6th  Looking Back: Happy February  Our first day back this week was Groundhog Day! We made some predictions about the groundhog and wrote a sentence to guess if he would see his shadow! Turns out Balzac Billy calls for 6 more weeks of winter!  This week in our UFLI lessons we did a short vowel review. We practiced reading longer words with blends at the beginning and at the end!  We also learned about the FLSZ spelling rule, which we also call the “floss rule”. This is a rule that applies to one syllable words, where if the last sound is a F, L, S, or Z, and the vowel that comes before it has a short vowel sound, then the last letter is doubled. (ie. Je ff wi ll pa ss Bu zz .) First Week of School: Sept.2-5

Welcome to Grade One!  Hello families! It has been a wonderful start to the school year. The first few days of school have been filled with excitement and new learning as teachers and students get to know everyone in their class.  This week at school students have been busy practicing new routines. Students are now familiar with their daily classroom routine, and have enjoyed getting to go outside for recess and lunch!  Looking Back:  During literacy this week, students began reviewing letters through the UFLI program (University of Florida Literacy Institute). This program follows a specific scope and sequence to teach students skills necessary for proficient reading.  This week, students focused on letter /Aa/. They practiced printing upper and lowercase letter A on whiteboards and in their printing books. Students followed a directed drawing to complete a picture of an apple.
