Happy Lunar New Year


Feb.17th was the first day of Lunar New Year! We learned about some of the traditions connected to this celebration, such as passing out red envelopes, cleaning your house, eating lucky foods (such as oranges) and watching dragon dances. We learned that the animal for 2026 is a fire horse. We did a fun directed drawing for Lunar New Year! 


In UFLI this week we began talking about consonant digraphs. These are when two consonants come together to make one sound. We learned two digraphs this week: /-ck/ and /sh/. We learned that /-ck/ comes at the end of a word (ex. duck, quack etc.) but /sh/ can be at the beginning or end of a word. (Ex. brush, shell). We practiced reading and writing words containing these new sounds. We also learned 4 new heart words this week: says, goes, she, we. Check your child’s UFLI folder for the two new decodable passages and some practice sentences with our new sounds! 


*Students have brought home a new game to practice reading words with our new spelling rules. *Please check the back of their UFLI folder to see the game board. There will be a new list of sentences to practice each week! 


In Science this week we learned about changing properties. We practiced changing different properties of our play-doh (Ex. long / short). We also started our final project for properties of matter. On Day 1 we had to use special materials (pipe cleaners, googly eyes, popsicle sticks, and play-doh) to make our first shapeshifter creation. On Day 2, we used the exact same materials and created a completely different shapeshifter. We will complete the writing portion of our project next week! 


Math:  Students have been practicing adding numbers to 20.  We have been working on strategies to solve equations such as using our fingers, drawing pictures, using a numberline, using tens frames, and using manipulatives.  We have also introduced a few new math games.  If you have a deck of cards, ask your child if they want to play a game called “Garbage”.  (Working on number sense and understanding tens frames).

  Looking Back: On Monday we celebrated international dot day by reading a story called The Dot. We then brainstormed some things that we could make out of a dot and drew our creations in our visual journals. In literacy this week, we learned the letter /t/. After practicing the sound for this letter, we learned how to print both upper and lowercase letter /t/ and learned how to draw a toucan to go along with our new letter sound. We have also started building words with all of the letters we have learned (s,m,a,t). We learned that we can change the beginning or ending sound and make a whole new word!   February. 2nd - 6th  Looking Back: Happy February  Our first day back this week was Groundhog Day! We made some predictions about the groundhog and wrote a sentence to guess if he would see his shadow! Turns out Balzac Billy calls for 6 more weeks of winter!  This week in our UFLI lessons we did a short vowel review. We practiced reading longer words with blends at the beginning and at the end!  We also learned about the FLSZ spelling rule, which we also call the “floss rule”. This is a rule that applies to one syllable words, where if the last sound is a F, L, S, or Z, and the vowel that comes before it has a short vowel sound, then the last letter is doubled. (ie. Je ff wi ll pa ss Bu zz .) First Week of School: Sept.2-5

Welcome to Grade One!  Hello families! It has been a wonderful start to the school year. The first few days of school have been filled with excitement and new learning as teachers and students get to know everyone in their class.  This week at school students have been busy practicing new routines. Students are now familiar with their daily classroom routine, and have enjoyed getting to go outside for recess and lunch!  Looking Back:  During literacy this week, students began reviewing letters through the UFLI program (University of Florida Literacy Institute). This program follows a specific scope and sequence to teach students skills necessary for proficient reading.  This week, students focused on letter /Aa/. They practiced printing upper and lowercase letter A on whiteboards and in their printing books. Students followed a directed drawing to complete a picture of an apple.
