Looking Back:


In UFLI  we learned 3 new rules for making longer words (-es, -ed and -ing). We learned that adding -es to the end of words that end in -ch, -sh, -s, -x, and -z makes the sound /is/.  The ending -ed, has 3 sounds (-d, -id, and -t) and you can add -ing to your words.  Practice reading these words with the roll and read this week.  Students learned 6 new heart words this week, two, does, many, any, been and into.  We have sent home two decodables to read this week.  Your reading challenge is to try to read for 6 minutes everyday!


In Math, students continued to practice their addition and subtraction facts.  We have been talking about accuracy (getting the right answer) and fluency (being able to recall facts quickly).  As well, we began exploring the idea of related facts through fact families and number bonds.  Students saw the connection between addition and subtraction.


In Science, we planted some vegetables.  Students used magnifying glasses to look closely at different types of seeds and predict the type of vegetable they came from.  We will watch our gardens grow over the next few weeks.

Muddy Conditions 

With the muddy conditions, please send your students with an extra pair of clothes in case they need them (ie socks and pants especially!).  Rubber boots are a great help for keeping us dry as we enjoy the outdoors. 

Field Trip to the Calgary Zoo - We are currently planning for our final field trip of the year to the Calgary Zoo on May 28th. We require 5 parent volunteers to accompany the class on this trip. Please reach out ASAP if you are interested in volunteering! 

Toys at School- NO! This is a reminder that students are to leave their toys at home, including Pokemon cards and stuffies. Toys are a distraction in the classroom where the focus is on learning. As well, toys can get lost , misplaced, or fall into someone else’s hands. The school is not responsible for dealing with such issues or replacement of articles gone missing.

  Looking Back: On Monday we celebrated international dot day by reading a story called The Dot. We then brainstormed some things that we could make out of a dot and drew our creations in our visual journals. In literacy this week, we learned the letter /t/. After practicing the sound for this letter, we learned how to print both upper and lowercase letter /t/ and learned how to draw a toucan to go along with our new letter sound. We have also started building words with all of the letters we have learned (s,m,a,t). We learned that we can change the beginning or ending sound and make a whole new word! (mat - sat -at).  We were very excited to bring home our UFLI folder this week! In it you will find some activities that you can practice over the weekend and during the week.   February. 2nd - 6th  Looking Back: Happy February  Our first day back this week was Groundhog Day! We made some predictions about the groundhog and wrote a sentence to guess if he would see his shadow! Turns out Balzac Billy calls for 6 more weeks of winter!  This week in our UFLI lessons we did a short vowel review. We practiced reading longer words with blends at the beginning and at the end!  We also learned about the FLSZ spelling rule, which we also call the “floss rule”. This is a rule that applies to one syllable words, where if the last sound is a F, L, S, or Z, and the vowel that comes before it has a short vowel sound, then the last letter is doubled. (ie. Je ff wi ll pa ss Bu zz .) First Week of School: Sept.2-5

Welcome to Grade One!  Hello families! It has been a wonderful start to the school year. The first few days of school have been filled with excitement and new learning as teachers and students get to know everyone in their class.  This week at school students have been busy practicing new routines. Students are now familiar with their daily classroom routine, and have enjoyed getting to go outside for recess and lunch!  Looking Back:  During literacy this week, students began reviewing letters through the UFLI program (University of Florida Literacy Institute). This program follows a specific scope and sequence to teach students skills necessary for proficient reading.  This week, students focused on letter /Aa/. They practiced printing upper and lowercase letter A on whiteboards and in their printing books. Students followed a directed drawing to complete a picture of an apple.
