May 4-9
Looking Back:
It was Mental Health Week at MTS! This week we had discussions focused around mental health and we talked about different ways to take care of ourselves. We also wore our hats on Wednesday for “Hats on for Mental Health.”
This week in UFLI we learned about open and closed syllables. We reviewed that a syllable is a word or a part of a word with one vowel sound. We learned that closed syllables end with a consonant sound (VC) and make the vowel sound short. (hop, kick, fast). We also learned that an open syllable ends with a vowel sound and does not have any consonant following it (V). In these words, the vowel sound is long. (hi, go she). We also reviewed compound words this week and practiced writing the first and second syllable in a word before combining them. Ex.) sun + set (sunset). Our new heart words this week were friend and because.
In math this week, we focused on number bonds and using the part-part-whole number model. We practiced solving some math problems using number bonds and writing the corresponding number sentence.
In science, we have been focusing on the needs of plants. Students have planted seeds and we have a few sprouts. Students are excited to observe the changes in the pants each day. See if your child can tell you the 4 things that plants need to survive and grow.
Looking Ahead:
Community Walks Notice
We are hoping to get out for a few community walks over the next few weeks and to enjoy learning outside. Depending on the weather, we will try to head out for a community walk one day this week.
School Information
Muddy Conditions
With the muddy conditions, please send your students with an extra pair of clothes in case they need them (ie socks and pants especially!). Rubber boots are a great help for keeping us dry as we enjoy the outdoors.
Field Trip to the Calgary Zoo - We are currently planning for our final field trip of the year to the Calgary Zoo on May 28th. We require 5 parent volunteers to accompany the class on this trip. Please reach out ASAP if you are interested in volunteering!
Toys at School- NO! This is a reminder that students are to leave their toys at home, including Pokeman cards and stuffies. Toys are a distraction in the classroom where the focus is on learning. As well, toys can get lost , misplaced, or fall into someone else’s hands. The school is not responsible for dealing with such issues or replacement of articles gone missing.
